Abstract: This article presents selected aspects of H.-G. Gadamer's hermeneutics, highlighting the context of the perception of science, and the criticism of methodological cognition embodied there. The author analyses the problem of truth and the role of philosophical self-scrutiny. Then, practical meaning of hermeneutics as well as its relation to ethics and freedom have been discussed. Presenting the importance of encounters with the difference, and of the openness of the dialogue as a basis for mutual understanding and experiencing that difference, the author analyses the aspects of the question, the statement and the answer. It leads to the comparison of distinct situations when questions are asked and of their pedagogical meaning, which indicates the interdependence of education and human sciences. Challenging the traditional opposition explaining-understanding, hermeneutics is presented as a philosophy dealing with the problem of the universality of understanding, which does not limit this category to a method in humanities. The author illustrates the proliferation of superstitions and the rooting in tradition, and discusses the aspect of non-subjective understanding and experiencing of other people. Special attention has been drawn to the problems and interpretative difficulties concerning the interest in 'things' and not intentions in the process of understanding (departure from the ’philosophy of consciousness’) and to the hesitations resulting from the perception of science.
